I founded Open Arms in December 2006 with two goals. First, I wanted to create a welcoming, warm place for rest and renewal. Second, I wanted to be a working artist.
I first came across the islands over a decade before while on a bare boat sailing cruise through the Caribbean. When my life's circumstances changed in 2003 I decided to return and bought land on St. John. The island was a natural fit for me, as it is a pristine environment with abundant natural beauty and plentiful opportunities to make my way as an artist. Its beauty continues to provide me with inspiration for my artwork.
Once the land was purchased, I began design work on Open Arms alongside Michael and Ted at Barefoot Architects in Cruz Bay. Together, we were able to turn my vision into a reality.
As A House of Open Arms was being built, I threw myself into the process, determined to be a part of its creation and to use it as an opportunity to build my skill. Throughout its construction and since its opening in early 2007, A House of Open Arms has been an integral part of my development as an artist. It has also brought me peace and a sense of renewed possibilities. My hope is that each of my guests will leave here having experienced the same.
